Abilene hosts the Children's Art and Literacy Festival each year in June. We decided to make a big venture out as a family of 4 and attend the parade. William Joyce was the author and illustrator featured this year so the parade was themed around his books.
They had cute little booths selling sno cones, offering face painting and other fun things for kids. It was in downtown Abilene, which is a neat area of town.
Our first stop was getting a sno cone! It wasn't that exciting for Ellis.
The people sitting near us at the parade mentioned some approaching bad weather. They frantically started packing up and running to their car. Jeremy and I kind of looked at each other and were thinking- they are over reacting. But the wind did start picking up and they ended the parade early, so we thought we should get to our car.
We ended up running to our car, because the wind was so strong and it was blowing dirt everywhere. We got in our car and headed towards the hospital so we could get Jeremy's car and head home.
It started raining and only a couple blocks from the parade, the hail started. I could barely see out the windshield. We saw a building with a covered portico. There were several cars already there, but we squeezed in behind, but not all of our car made it under. The hail ended up being as big as softballs and it sounded like bowling bowls were pounding our car. EC was pretty upset. She kept saying- the ice is popping our car.
It knocked out one of our back windows, the front windshield is cracked, and every panel has huge dents.

Overall, we are so thankful that it didn't break one of the windows where Ellis and EC were sitting. And we are all ok. Abilene had tons of damage- lots of buildings with windows knocked out. Cars are severely damaged. It will probably be a while before we can get anything repaired.
And fortunately, at our house, there was only small hail, so our house and the horses were fine.
